Key points to remember
- Evaluate the way your organisation makes decisions. Choose appropriate methods
for different decisions and be creative about involving people.
- Don't avoid decisions. Making decisions by default or stealth is the worst
strategy. Making clear and well-planned decisions makes a good organisation
into a great one.
- Involving people in the decision-making process is vital, particularly
when they're going to be affected by the decisions that you make. Explain
to people what role consultation will play in making the final decision.
- In many circumstances, there isn't necessarily a 'right' or 'wrong' decision.
- Sometimes you may have to be firm about making decisions, but be aware
of why and when this is the case.
- People accept decisions they don't initially agree with if they have been
involved in the process and understand why the decisions have been made.
- Don't expect everyone to agree, and don't let disagreements build into
resentment. Spend time talking things through with individuals.
- Review decisions without being too hard on yourselves and encourage an
atmosphere of learning.
