The following activities are suggestions to further explore the issues raised by voluntary matters 3 in group discussions or training sessions.
You may choose to do the activities with other people from your organisation or with people from a range of organisations. Contact your local Volunteer Bureau or Council for Voluntary Service to see if there is already a group forum in your area. If not, set one up!
Watching the Count Me In programme in a group will raise a number of points, below are other suggestions to get more out of a group session.
As a group, discuss the advantages of encouraging diversity amongst your volunteer group and identify the potential challenges of managing diverse volunteer groups. Spend about thirty minutes talking this over.
In pairs, talk about how representative your organisation is of the wider community - spend about twenty minutes on this.
On your own, consider each step in your process of volunteering (first contact, application, interview and screening, induction training, placement, support and supervision) to see if there are any ways in which your organisation might be unintentionally discouraging some sections of the community. How could you reduce these barriers? Write notes on your own and then discuss with a partner. Spend about forty-five minutes on this.
In small groups, identify a group in the community which is under-represented in your organisation, and discuss how you could make volunteering more relevant and meaningful to this section of the community. Try this for about forty-five minutes.
In pairs, think of suggestions for re-organising the activities that your volunteers do in order to increase the diversity of roles and offer a greater range of volunteer opportunities - do this for about thirty minutes.
