Making a new start

You are a new manager at a day centre for older people that relies on volunteers. Managing volunteers is an important part of your role. In your hand-over with Bryan, the person who previously had your post, you learn that the volunteer team are very dispirited and as a result, rather unreliable.

What is our first step?

Read the transcript below and/or view the video then select an option:

Bryan:

'You've got a fantastic team of volunteers here at the moment. But I should just let you know a few things - in confidence of course...

George is hard to get going sometimes, Roger tends to turn up when he likes, and Rose is a bit tearful - she's a bit depressed at the moment.

Apart from that, they're a great team!'

  1. Focus on all volunteers individually, they are all very different

  2. Concentrate on improving team spirit

  3. Wait and see what the situation really is
