Facing the risks

You're a volunteer manager for a homeless charity and want to setting up new drop-in evenings at different locations in the town. Volunteers and staff will be doing outreach work to let homeless people know about the service. They may be approaching people with drug and alcohol problems on the street. One of your volunteers, Maria, says she's going to go the press to complain that volunteers are being put at risk.

What do you do?

Read the transcript below and/or view the video, then select an option:

Maria:

'What the hell do you think you're doing?! It's dangerous putting volunteers in this situation!

I said I wanted to help in the homeless hostel, not deal with dangerous people out on the streets! I'm gonna get killed!

I think the press should know about this!!'

  1. You arrange a meeting to discuss her concerns

  2. Panic - is she right about the risks? Reassess the validity of the project

  3. Maria going to the press is the worst thing that could happen - you prioritise this
