Activities
The activities are suggestions to further explore the
issues raised by voluntary matters 3 in group
discussions or training sessions.
You may choose to do the activities with other people
from your organisation or with people
from a range of organisations, contact your local Volunteer
Bureau or Council for Voluntary Service
to see if there is already a group forum in your area.
If not, set one up!

in a group will raise a number of points, below are
other suggestions to get more out of a group session.
Discuss
As a group, discuss what qualities a leader
needs, and whether these will be different
according to the size or age of the organisation? Also
consider whether good leaders also need to be good managers.
Spend half an hour on this
Pair up and discuss what you think you are best at,
leading or managing. Spend about twenty
minutes on this.
Try
As a group make a list of inspirational leaders,
from any time or place. Then try to pinpoint how they
inspired people try to be as specific as possible.
Spend about half an hour on this.
Pair up and spend about ten minutes completing these
two sentences: "An inspirational leader
is someone who

manager is someone who... " Write down
your answers and then discuss with the larger group
for about twenty minutes.
As a group make a list of managerial skills
and a list of leadership skills. Compare the
two lists. What are the differences and similarities?
