Key points to remember

  • There are some born leaders. But the skills needed for leadership can, to a certain extent, be learnt.

  • There's no correct way of leading - everyone has their own style.

  • There are some core skills that all leaders cite as important:

    Being able to listen
Working with and being supported by a great team
Being able to spot and develop the good ideas of others
    Delegating responsibility
    Making sure information flows freely.

  • A good leader will acknowledge their own weaknesses, and a good team will compensate for them.

  • Leaders need to be able to create a vision that inspires others.

  • Good leaders respond to people individually.

  • Leaders are creative and don't always follow the rules.

  • Leaders have to be persistent and deal with scepticism and hostility about their new ideas.

  • Being an inspirational leader is hard work, and it requires a lot of commitment.
